Risa Kawchuk, B.A., M.A., B.Ed
I homeschool my two sons, Daegan (born 2002) and Gareth (born 2005). We take a relaxed, eclectic approach to our homeschooling,
with a mix of structured and unstructured activities. We incorporate community resources, some curriculum, the library, internet,
games, DVDs, etc. as it suits us. Our homeschool has varied from year to year as needs have changed: this year we are taking a
more structured, curricula-based approach to certain subjects; last year we did tons of classes and workshops and almost no
curricula; the year before was based around books and read-alouds. I have read (and continue to read) widely on the topic of
education, and have found something of value in just about every philosophy out there, from unschooling (John Holt) to classical
(Charlotte Mason, The Well-Trained Mind), from Montessori to Waldorf. I believe each family must find what works best for them; there
are many routes to a successful education. In our homeschool, our educational philosophy is perhaps best summed up by this Chinese
proverb: "Listen to all, plucking a feather from each passing goose, but follow no one absolutely."
I am active in the homeschool community, both in Calgary and elsewhere, contributing to the discussion on several e-mail lists and forums.
My children have attended many classes and workshops for homeschoolers, such as art and drama classes; CHSA (Calgary Homeschooler Association)
classes; homeschool days at the zoo, science centre, Heritage Park, etc. I also write a popular blog about our homeschool
adventures: www.educatingrisa.com It serves as both a creative outlet and record-keeping for me,
and is intended as a resource for homeschooling (and after-schooling) families, both locally and abroad.
I acquired both a BA and MA in philosophy (specializing in logic/critical thinking) and worked in publishing for a stint before returning
to university for my B.Ed. Over the years I have taught and tutored in many subject areas and all ages, from kindergarten to university; my favourite subject is math.
Some of my personal interests include birding, nature photography, soccer, travel, and cooking. I also help
my husband run our own software consulting company. I love being able to express my passion for education and life-long learning as a homeschool facilitator.
