PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY & RATIONALE
Over the years we have come to value the effective use of time and the creative flexibility of learning at home. This program provides the learner with the opportunities
to acquire the established disciplines of math, science, social studies and language arts, as well as interest-based subjects.
We believe that our children's education should focus on academic content through student interests, good research skills and critical thinking skills and that students should
have fun. Parents have the right to educate their children at home and are welcome to choose from a wide range of diverse philosophies and programs. These vary in structure
from unique family-designed programs to the Alberta Education curriculum.
Our philosophy, well implemented, provides a jumping off point to our common goal of life long learning.
COACHING TIPS FOR YOUR VISIT:
Parents often feel protective of what their student is learning and sometimes fear that the student might
forget everything. Students can feel awkward, especially if it’s the first visit. Even families who have
been with us for years report that until the visit is well underway, they feel trepidation about their
programs: Am I doing enough? Is it the right stuff?
To quell fears and feel prepared, here are a few ideas to work on ahead of time with your student.
- Launch a discussion about what activities, events, groups or individual learning that has occurred since the start up or the last visit.
- Ask specifically what the student enjoyed/disliked and encourage lots of details.
- Record the points (if the child is young) or guide the writing and have it ready for the visit.
- Remind your student that the visit is a celebration of what is being learned and experienced and that she/he is in charge of the telling.
- Remember that your facilitator is present to encourage and assist you and your student with whatever is needed.
